Flynt's parents were field ornithologists, and while his classmates were heading off to summer camps and beaches, he spent every summer going on expeditions with them. There were no other kids around, the adults left for work at dawn, and the only entertainment available turned out to be nature itself. By the time he finished school, he had a serious insect collection and a clear idea of who he wanted to become.
After graduating from university with honors, he got more serious about activism — washing oil off birds and planting trees on burned land became routine for him.
He met Twinkle at a party in honor of a court victory — the volunteers and activists he'd been fighting yet another developer with were celebrating the win together, and Twinkle ended up there tagging along with one of the guests.
Skytech Megacorp already knew Flynt from a student grant for his work on dragonfly flight, so after graduation they invited him to their flight systems lab — to an engineer named Leviathan Voss, and the two of them clicked from the very first day. Flynt brought in live dragonflies, Leviathan spent hours filming their flight with a high-speed camera, and together they worked out how to recreate those movements in metal.
At some point Leviathan got promoted and moved to other projects — first one floor up, then two, and then a whole ten. For a while they still ran into each other in the hallways, then that stopped too, and eventually Flynt wasn't even sure Leviathan still worked at the company at all. The lab, meanwhile, went to new management, and the cost-cutting began — different alloys, different chemicals, and more and more waste. Flynt wrote several reports, after which his badge stopped opening doors, and his current project was shut down as unprofitable and moved off to a warehouse. Whether even one of those reports ever reached the head of Skytech Megacorp, Flynt doesn't know to this day.
Six months later he came back — that night a service door very conveniently turned out to be unlocked, thanks to an anonymous helper from P.Y.R.O. In the morning the warehouse was missing one archived prototype, and Skytech's internal documents still call it theft. Flynt himself calls it something else — he just took back what he and Leviathan had built together.
He finished the wings on his own, from memory and old drafts, in a cramped rented room where the blueprints gradually pushed out almost everything else. He flew alone too — at night he paid visits to Skytech facilities and burned what he considered the most harmful. It didn't always go well. The papers called Flynt an unknown vigilante one day and a serial arsonist the next, and the fact that he never aimed at people didn't make him feel any better.
Entomology doesn't pay the rent, his savings were vanishing into spare parts, and that's exactly when his old friends from P.Y.R.O. found him — people he'd long lost touch with. They wanted to help — and at the same time they understood perfectly well that a man with wings like these would come in very handy in the arena. Flynt agreed, because he really does need the money. As for what exactly he plans to spend it on — that's something he isn't talking about yet.
